Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala is Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India and is Ex-HOD. He received his B.Tech degree from IIT-Kanpur in 1975, and his MS and Ph.D degrees from the University of Maine, USA in 1977 and 1979, respectively. From 1979 to 1981, he was with Washington State University as Assistant Professor and since 1981 has been teaching at IIT-Madras.
Dr.Jhunjhunwala leads the Telecommunications and Computer Networks group (TeNeT) at IIT-Madras. This group is closely working with industry in the development of number of Telecommunications and Computer Network Systems which includes corDECT Wireless in Local Loop system, Fibre Access Network, DSL Systems, Rural ATM and remote medical diagnostic Kit.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala has been instrumental in setting up IITM’s Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) that functions as a formal technology incubator to design, pilot and incubate scalable rural inclusive business ventures.
Dr.Jhunjhunwala was awarded Padma Shri in the year 2002, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1998 andÂ Dr.Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in year 1997.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala is a Board member of several Telecom and IT companies in India, including BSNL, VSNL, Polaris, Sasken, Tejas and HTL. He is on the board of several R&D and educational institutions. He is on several government bodies formulating and driving policies in the area of Telecom and Human Resource Development.
